A Clinical Approach to The Effect of Boswellia Serrata in Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is one of the most common diseases of the musculoskeletal system that reduces the quality of life.In addition to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs used in the treatment, molecules isolated from natural sources and standardized plant extracts are also considered as new options in the treatment of inflammatory diseases. In this review, it is aimed to present clinical studies on the gumresin of Boswellia serrata, which is used for joint health due to its anti-inflammatory, antiarthritic and analgesic effects, and the active compounds obtained from this resin. In B. serrata gumresin, boswellic acid in pentacyclic triterpenic acid structure inhibits the pro-inflammatory enzyme 5- lipoxygenase and the synthesis of its products, pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators (tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin-1 Beta (IL-1) and interleukin-6). It has also been found that it provides significant down-regulation of interferon gamma (IFN-), one of the T-lymphocyte activators.. Clinical studies have shown that standardized B. serrata extracts or preparations enriched with active compounds have curative effects on pain, inflammation and quality of life parameters in osteoarthritis, but more comprehensive clinical studies are needed.
